Core Resources
Every home should have a core library of books on sustainable living
and emergency procedures, including first aid. People should also read
these books and take at least the basic advice on how to
prepare for emergencies. Obviously, preparation will vary
depending on
financial resources, geographic risk (hurricane potential, flood
potential, etc.), and medical considerations. But acquiring basic
self-sufficiency knowledge is cheap. And everyone benefits when
we become more self-sufficient, and less dependent on an eternal,
uninterruped
supply of food, water, fuel, medicine, and emergency help.
The books and resources listed here are the essentials for building
your self-sufficiency knowledge.
Food and Self
Sufficient Living John Seymour's The Self Sufficient Life and How
to Live It is an illustrated hardcover book that covers
everything from carpentry, electrical work, and beer-making to the
various aspects of growing your own food. Add John Jeavon's core
Biointensive gardening book, How
to Grow More Vegetables and Fruits..., and you have a
solid trove of information on how to be self sufficient, even on a small plot of
land.
First Aid,
Home Medicine, and Preparedness The rest of the books
cover core issues in crisis preparedness, first aid, and handling
medical issues when there is not doctor avaialable. They are strongly
recommended as the basis for a preparedness bookshelf.
